On Saturday, 22 February, Camden Music hosted our first-ever Try an Instrument Day at the Crowndale Centre. This exciting event aimed to introduce students to the music service, offer trial lessons on a variety of instruments, and inspire them to make music.
Nearly 40 students from primary schools across Camden attended this free event, which was open to families with children in school years 3 to 6. It was a fantastic opportunity for children to try out various musical instruments, meet our amazing tutors, and have fun making music!
The day began with pupils coming together with our Camden Music specialist instrumental tutors to play a range of icebreaker music games and complete some singing warm-ups. In small groups, the pupils then had the chance to have trial lessons on the guitar, violin, cello, trumpet, trombone, flute, saxophone, and clarinet.
The first Try an Instrument Day was funded by Camden Music Trust. Their mission is to help children and young people in Camden, especially those facing hardship, participate in music activities. The Trust supports music-making for its benefits to personal and educational development.
Feedback from parents and students was incredibly positive. All pupils expressed an interest in learning an instrument or joining a music group or club. Parents shared their thoughts, saying, “…it was good to expand his horizons,” “Very well organised, communication is great and kids enjoyed the day a lot! It is a fantastic opportunity to try an instrument before committing or for choosing a second instrument,” and “My daughter loves playing music and she wanted to try different instruments that she knows! So she found it interesting and exciting to play other instruments.”

- Camjam (Junior Music Centre) at Brecknock Primary School for pupils up to Year 5.
- Senior Music Centre at Camden School for Girls for pupils in Years 6 to 13.
