Steel pan music originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is known for its vibrant and rhythmic sound. The instruments are made from oil drums, carefully crafted and tuned to produce a range of notes.

The Training Steel Band is open to pupils in school years 4 to 6, while the Camden Youth Steel Band welcomes pupils in school years 7 to 13. No prior experience is needed, and all young people are encouraged to join. Our first rehearsal was on Saturday, 1 March, but we welcome new players to sign up. In the first rehearsal, the pupils worked on traditional steel pan tunes and even an arrangement of ‘Cars’ by Gary Numan. It was great fun and the young people can’t wait until next Saturday!

The launch of the new steel bands has already generated much excitement, with requests for performances later in the summer. We also plan to launch an adult steel band later this year to complement our existing Camden Saturday Singers adult choir.

We thank the KOKO Foundation for their financial support in launching the new bands and providing bursaries for young people. Camden Music Trust has also raised funds to purchase a new set of pans, which we will receive later this year. Camden Music Trust’s mission is to help children and young people in Camden, especially those facing hardship, participate in music activities. The Trust supports music-making for its benefits to personal and educational development.
