On Saturday, 21 February, Camden Music welcomed pupils in Years 3 to 6 to our annual Try an Instrument Day. This free event, funded by Camden Music Trust, is designed to remove barriers to music‑making and help families make informed choices before starting lessons. It gives pupils the chance to explore what feels right for them before committing to an instrument.
More than forty young musicians joined us at the Crowndale Centre, where they enjoyed taster sessions on guitar, trumpet, clarinet, flute, violin and cello. Our instrumental tutors led short, friendly taster lessons, helping pupils understand how each instrument works and what early learning feels like.

This year, we were also delighted to introduce a Steel Pan workshop, which was particularly popular, with children commenting on the unique sound and excitement it brought to the day.
The building was buzzing with curiosity as children moved between rooms, trying their hand at everything from strings to brass. Families told us they valued how relaxed and welcoming the atmosphere felt, with plenty of time and encouragement for each child to explore.
Parent feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing how valuable the experience had been:
“My child really enjoyed trying out the different instruments. It was a great opportunity to understand what each involves.”
“My daughter had a great time and enjoyed every instrument she tried.”
“She was buzzing afterwards. It really helped her decide she wants to learn the clarinet.”
“My child got to try the violin, which we wouldn’t otherwise have encouraged her to explore. It really ignited her interest in learning an instrument.”
Many families left feeling more confident about choosing an instrument and starting lessons in the summer term. Several pupils expressed interest in joining one of our music groups next term.

If your child was inspired by the event, or if you couldn’t make it this year, Camden Music offers instrumental lessons in schools during the day and at our Junior and Saturday Music Centres. With more than 45 music groups, including choirs, bands and orchestras, and with a team of specialist tutors, there is a place for every young musician.
We work with over 4,500 children and young people across Camden each week and would love to welcome even more.
