At Camden Music, we celebrate all kinds of music and are always looking for exciting new ways to explore different musical styles and traditions. Whether it’s classical, jazz, pop, or something entirely experimental, we believe in making music together, being creative, and—most importantly—having fun. Our programmes are designed to inspire young musicians to express themselves, collaborate, and discover the joy of music in all its forms.
CamBand, our Junior Saturday Centre orchestra, recently delivered a captivating performance that brought silent cinema to life through sound. Over the past half term, the young musicians have been hard at work composing an original soundtrack for a silent film, and the results were nothing short of magical.

Working in small groups, the students scored different scenes from the film, from daring rescues to dramatic chases. They used their own instruments, body percussion, and a variety of hand percussion to create a rich and imaginative soundscape. The ensemble also came together to compose sections collaboratively, demonstrating impressive teamwork and musical sensitivity.
For the final performance, the children performed the entire three-minute soundtrack from memory. They timed their melodies and sound effects perfectly with the film, showing not only musical skill but also a deep understanding of the story they were helping to tell.
Lis Stewart, CamBand’s conductor, led the project with great care and creativity. She selected the film and guided the composition process, supported by the dedicated CamBand tutor team. Together, they created a space where the children could explore their ideas freely and take full ownership of their work.
CamBand’s performance was a true celebration of creativity, collaboration, and confidence. The audience was thoroughly impressed – and left wanting more!
